![The bravest thing you can do is to admit that you're struggling and need help.
Such a taboo topic that its even difficult for some clinicians to ask clients directly about suicide - but the more we talk about it the better!
Maternal suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the pregnancy and postpartum period in Australia. Each person leaves behind family, friends and community.
The perinatal period is highly complex and we know that passive suicidal ideation can quickly turn active but we currently do not understand suicide enough to predict the pathway from passive to active. This is why its important to talk about it!
Research shows that the postpartum period holds higher risk for suicide yet most postnatal support stops at 4-6 weeks. Parents are isolated, sleep deprived, anxious, exhausted during this time and the support tends to end.
Sadly, less is known about paternal suicide yet 3/4 of all suicides in Australia are men - we just dont collect the data for the perinatal period. Wild!!
What we do know thanks to important new research; shame is a significant feature of suicide, entrapment with "no escape", feelings of failure, loss of self, isolation, 'defective' talk, feeling unworthy and not belonging [even in their family], beliefs that they dont have what it takes - are all signs of suicidal ideation.

If this sounds like you or someone you know, please consider reaching out to a trusted family, friend or mental health professional / helpline. I know it can be difficult to see beyond that darkness, but I promise you, there is light to come.
Let's continue to have the hard conversations together, it may just save a life ❤️🙏
